Sheep 

2025-26 marked our 13th year of having a sheep project with the Crestomere 4-H Multi Club.

The Sheep Project has potential for 4 different projects. 

The Sheep project meets once per month, typically after the Club General Meeting. Regardless of how many sheep projects you are in, all Sheep Projects are combined into one project meeting. Members must source/pay for the livestock themselves.

From October until February we do not yet have our lambs, so we spend lots of time learning about sheep and the sheep industry. 

We do this through learning sessions, games, tours, and guest speakers. Every year will be a little different! 

Livestock are not brought to the meetings until the spring. 

The March lamb weigh-in day, officially starts the sheep portion of the project. 

For the next 2 months we work directly with our lambs/sheep to get them ready to show at Achievement Day. 

This involves a lot of sheep time practicing handling our sheep, learning how to show, learning how to groom and just having a lot of fun getting to know our sheep and our fellow showmen.

Sheep Market Lamb – Members raise a lamb specifically for meat production, focusing on proper nutrition, muscle development, health care, and preparing the animal for market and show. 

Members must source/pay for the livestock themselves. Lambs must be born after Dec 15 of the club year. 

The lamb must be an appropriate age to make finish weight by Achievement Day. 

The project leader will help with questions around this. The Achievement Day for this project is at the Achievement Day auction when the animal is auctioned for sale. 

Sheep Ewe Lamb – This project involves raising and developing a young female sheep (under one year old), emphasizing growth, structural correctness, breed traits, and future breeding potential. 

Lambs must be born after Dec 15 of the club year. 

The Achievement Day for this project is at the Achievement Day auction when the animal is shown in the ring and judged.

Sheep Yearling Ewe – Members manage and exhibit a female sheep that is 1–2 years old, focusing on reproductive soundness, body condition, and overall flock improvement. 

The yearling must have been shown as a 4-H ewe lamb the previous year.

 The Achievement Day for this project is at Achievement Day when the animal is shown in the ring and judged.

Sheep Mature Ewe – This project highlights the care and management of an adult female sheep, with attention to lambing, mothering ability, longevity, and productivity. 

The mature ewe must have previously been shown as a 4-H ewe lamb and yearling ewe. 

The Achievement Day for this project is at Achievement Day when the animal is shown in the ring and judged.
